Project 04 – Growth and characterisation of organic heterostructures

Michael George Ramsey, oa.Univ.Prof.Dr.

The goal of this project is to understand organic interfaces, the formation of organic heterostructures and ultimately be able to steer the self-organisation process such that heterostructures of high structural definition can be produced. We wish to gain insight into these issues with in-situ UHV OMBE growth studies following both the electronic and geometric structure from (sub)monolayer exposures up to device relevant dimensions with a wide variety of surface science techniques. The molecules chosen for investigation are not only directly device relevant but are, albeit challenging, also good experimental models that are amenable to ab-initio calculations. The project can be partitioned into three main topics; 1) crystalline organic thin film substrates, 2) sandwiched heterostructures and 3) laterally patterned heterostructures of sexithiophene, sexiphenyl and porphyrins. We will be producing and characterising crystalline films of both pure and functionalised 6T, 6P and metal-porphyrins on a variety of single crystal inorganic substrates. These will be the ideal substrates for the second topic, the controlled study of organic-organic interfaces and heterostructure growth. Initially the heterostructure work will concentrate on geometric and electronic structure of the interface and the initial stages of growth of simple sandwich structures of both pure and functionalised molecules. We then plan in the second phase to concentrate on the construction and characterisation of superlattice structures. The two routes we wish to explore for laterally patterned (as opposed to sandwiched) heterostructures are from crystalline fibres and from chemically patterned substrates.
